2008 Mission to Lithuania (Parliamentary Election)

The third EOTP mission observed the parliamentary election in Lithuania on 12 October 2008. This was the largest mission within the framework of the project and consisted of 119 observers from Belarus, Lithuania and Sweden.

The pre-observation training was led by Norwegian and Belarusian political scientists and human rights defenders. A lecture held by representative of Central Electoral Committee of Lithuania contributed to a better understanding of the electoral procedures for conducting parliamentary elections in Lithuania.

During the observation, the mission covered around 5% of all the polling stations in the country. Each group visited from eight to ten polling stations in Klaipeda, Šiauliai, Telšiai, Alytus, Marijampolė, Utena, Panevėžys, Kaunas, Vilnius, and Tauragė regions.

The preliminary results of the observation were presented by the EOTP group at a press conference in the Seimas (Lithuanian Parliament) a day after the election. A comprehensive report with recommendations, was prepared by the group two months after the election.
